Salsa - style of social dance from Cuba and Pueto Rico, salsa music tends to be faster y picante (spicy)In salsa, the basic step is done to a quick-quick-slow, quick-quick-slow rhythm on beats 1-2-3, 5-6-7 of an 8 count. On beats 4 and 8, no additional steps are taken. That's why counts 4 and 8 are considered the “slow” portion of salsa rhythm. This “slow” portion of the basic step is what sets On1 and On2 salsa apart.

Social dances are dances that have a social function and context. Social dances are intended for participation rather than performance. They are often danced merely to socialise and for entertainment, though they may have ceremonial, competitive and performance functions 

Latin and Salsa classes focus on exercising virtually all major muscle groups, including the heart. The gluteals, hamstrings, quadriceps, calves and core area will be exercised relatively aggressively in order to perform the various step sequences.

The upper body and arms must maintain specific positions, so they will receive a workout as well, albeit to a lesser degree.

The types of movements associated with the various Latin and Salsa dance styles will also improve flexibility, balance and coordination. Increases in flexibility will promote improvements in blood and oxygen flow into the muscle tissue and the flushing of toxins, essentially helping to cleanse your body.

Gains in balance and coordination are beneficial in performing daily tasks and other physical activities with less effort and a reduced probability of injury.

You may want to consider wearing a skirt or dress that's flowy, leggings, fitted jeans or pants that are made from a stretchy fabric. Another great idea is yoga pants or capris, as they will allow you to move around easily. Be sure to avoid clothing that is tight or restrictive, as it will make it difficult to dance.

Footwear can be sneakers, shoes or heels but make sure you can easily move in them!
